Altyn-Emel National Park, Kazakhstan's first national park, is situated in the south-east of the country, in the heart of Central Asia, in the Zhetysu region. It encompasses the Ili River valley, the Kapchagai Reservoir to the south, the low Atau mountains to the east, and the south-western foothills of the Dzungarian Alatau to the north-west.

Altyn-Emel National Park, established on April 10, 1996, is Kazakhstan's largest nature reserve, founded to protect a unique natural complex, as well as archaeological and historical monuments and rare species of fauna and flora.
